The Truthiness About Colbert
Edward Dron
In my opinion, not only should the dictionary contain Colbert’s picture under the word “truthiness”, but also under “savvy”. As a loyal viewer of the Colbert Report, I am frequently impressed by how savvy his team is at getting others to promote his show.
One of the most brilliant schemes has to do with Colbert coining the word “truthiness”. After Merriam-Webster declared “truthiness” as the Word of the Year 2006, the Colbert team went to work. On one of his shows, Colbert noted that even though his word won this honor, it was still missing from the Merriam-Webster dictionary.
This is were it gets interesting. During this episode Colbert told his viewers that he has replicated a dictionary page with “truthiness” included in the content (they removed “try” to make room for the new word). Then he told his viewers that he DOES NOT want them to go to their local library and past this new page on top of the real Merriam-Webster page. He repeated the DO NOT DO IT phrase a few time. Do you think his viewers listened?
