Annoying Noise

August 18th, 2007 by Edward Dron

This is a little off topic; however, it’s just too interesting not to share.Teen Noise

In downtown Vancouver certain establishments are installing devices that emit an annoying high frequency sound that only teenagers can hear. This noise is used to discourage teens from loitering around shopping malls and street corners.

Although this is interesting, it’s not the coolest part of this story. What’s blog worthy is how the young folks have adopted this high pitch sound for their own use. Teens are actually recording this sound and using it as a secret ringer, which their parents and teachers can’t hear! You have to respect their ingenuity.

Apparently, this is also happening in other cities.

Why do so many organizations alienate such an important market? I actually feel sorry for teenagers. The misbehaving of a certain number of teenagers have made it bad for the whole age demographic. I have a teenage daughter who has never been in trouble, makes good grades, works, and I see how some adults in stores look at her. They only change their tune when they notice that she is with me. The way some adults speak to teenagers is insulting and frankly it is no wonder that some take an attitude with the offending adults. I would too if someone spoke to me like that. This is just another example of it.

Here’s an idea, if you don’t want kids skateboarding by your store, support the development of a skateboard park in your neighbourhood so they have somewhere to go! Do something positive instead of treating them terribly. They do grow up after all!
