Is ‘viral marketing’ just a fancy new way of saying ‘word of mouth’?
If you think that these two terms are interchangeable, you’re not alone. There are a lot of smart people that would back you up. However, there are also talented folks who would argue the other side.
In a recent blog entry, Seth Godin does a great job distinguishing between the two terms. If you’re not sure how these two concepts differ, his article should shed some light.

Just ran across a great article from the creator of the Obama Girl video (viewed over 100 million times). Ben Relles, the author, shares some guidelines & tips on how to create successful viral videos for political campaigns.
In addition, Ben revealed an interesting fact about viewership: 70% of “views” for their videos occur within the first week of airing.

There’s no doubt that movie studios have seen the light when it comes to viral marketing. From The Dark Knight teasers to the Knocked Up microsite, studios are using the internet to build momentum and attract viewers.
To promote an upcoming film called Wall-E, Disney/Pixar has constructed an elaborate site called buynlarge.com. What I love about this site is how it integrates with the actual movie. There are many factors that can cause thousands, if not millions, of people to forward something to their friends. As the example below demonstrates, sometimes all you need is an absurd business concept to attract attention.
3D Mailbox is attempting to redefine what it means to check your email. Instead of using a text-based interface, this company has decided to offer a “Second Life” type environment to deliver a unique email experience. Check out the trailer for this bizarre application.
