Do It For Colonel Sanders

November 19th, 2007 by Edward Dron

Will It SpillThis summer I reported on a creative campaign by Mentos staring an enthusiastic intern named Trevor. It was a big success for Mentos and garnered them a lot of free publicity.

Predictably, this success has started to produce imitators. I recently received an email from a KFC representative regarding a new microsite they’ve created called willitspill.com. KFC has hired an intern named Will to promote their new Triple Dip Strips. Will’s job is to find out if Triple Dip Strips will spill or not.

Like most imitations, it’s not as good as the original. Personally, I think it falls short in the interactive and community building department. Plus the stunts are kind of pointless.

Post-it Pranks

November 8th, 2007 by Edward Dron

If you do a quick search on Youtube for Post-it Notes, you’ll find a large collection of videos where people are using Post-it Notes to orchestrate pranks. I don’t know if some of these videos are the work of a marketing department; however, as a viral marketing concept, there’s a number of things I like about it:

  1. The fun nature of these videos translate into a favorable brand image.
  2. It has the potential to inspire others to do their own prank.
  3. It’s easy to do.
  4. After completing a prank, people might want to post it on the web.
  5. It encourages people to use up a lot of Post-It Notes.
  6. They’re interesting enough to watch that YouTube visitors might share them with their friends…or post it on their blog.

It would be great if 3M had a Post-It prank contest to display and encourage all this creativity.

Guinness Spreads Viral

November 1st, 2007 by Edward Dron

In hopes of having the same success that the Dark Knight campaign had, Guinness has launch their own online mystery.

The first set of clues are contained within a recently posted YouTube video and a PDF (via Experience Curve). These clues should lead you to…some. Hopefully the payoff will be something cooler than a commercial. Let me know if you figure it out.
